「なぜ、外国語を学ぶ必要があるのですか？」
英語教員として教壇に立つ中で、生徒たちから幾度となく投げかけられてきた問いです。文部科学省の学習指導要領でも「実際のコミュニケーションにおいて活用できる基礎的な能力の育成」が強く求められていますが、教室の中だけで教科書を読み合う授業では、生徒たちの中に「英語を使う必然性」はどうしても生まれません。
大学院時代に学んだ「言葉の本質」
私自身、この問いに対する明確な答えを見つけたのは、大学院時代に他国の先生たちと行った協働プロジェクトでの経験でした。
プロジェクトのメンバーは国籍も母語もバラバラ。彼らが話す英語は、文法的に完璧な「ネイティブスピーカーの英語」ではありませんでした。発音にはそれぞれの母語の癖があり、時には言葉に詰まることもありました。しかし、そこには「互いの文化を理解したい」「共に一つの目標を達成したい」という強烈な熱意がありました。
その時、私は雷に打たれたような衝撃を受けました。言葉とは、テストの点数を競うためのものではなく、「異なる背景を持つ人間同士の心と心を繋ぐ、最強のツール（Lingua Franca）」なのだと。
「Global Classroom」に込めた想い
日本の生徒たちにも、この「言葉が通じた瞬間の感動」を味わってほしい。その想いから、私はオンライン国際交流コミュニティ「Global Classroom」を創設しました。
このコミュニティの目的は、単に英語を練習することではありません。無料で安全な「いつもの教室」という空間から、海を越えた同世代とリアルタイムで繋がり、共に笑い、共に考え、新たな友人関係を構築することです。そこに「文法の間違いを恐れる」という日本の教室特有の空気はありません。「伝えたい」という思いが先行し、気づけば生徒たちは身振り手振りを交えながら、必死に英語を紡ぎ出しています。

しかし、いざ海外の友人を前にした時、言葉が全く出てこなければコミュニケーションは成立しません。Global Classroomという「本番の舞台」で生徒たちが堂々と振る舞えるようにするための、最強のトレーニングツール。それこそが、私が開発した「PicSpeak」です。
PicSpeakで「写真描写」を通じて英語を口に出す瞬発力と自信を養い、Global Classroomで実際に世界中の友人と対話する。このサイクルを回すことこそが、これからの時代に本当に求められる「生きた英語教育」だと確信しています。私はこれからも、生徒たちの世界を広げるための仕組みを創り続けていきます。
"Why do we need to learn a foreign language?"
As an English teacher standing in the classroom, I have been asked this question countless times by my students. While the Ministry of Education (MEXT) strongly emphasizes "cultivating basic abilities that can be utilized in actual communication," it is inherently difficult to foster a "genuine necessity to use English" when lessons are confined to simply reading textbooks within the four walls of a classroom.
The True Essence of Language Learned in Graduate School
I found the clear answer to this question through my own experience during graduate school, working on collaborative projects with teachers from other countries.
The members of the project had diverse nationalities and mother tongues. The English they spoke was not the grammatically perfect "native-speaker English." Their pronunciation carried the accents of their native languages, and sometimes they struggled to find the right words. However, what they possessed was a passionate desire to understand each other's cultures and achieve a common goal together.
It struck me like lightning. Language is not a subject where we compete for test scores; it is the ultimate tool (Lingua Franca) that connects the hearts of people from different backgrounds.
The Vision Behind "Global Classroom"
I wanted my students in Japan to experience this "emotion of making oneself understood." Driven by this desire, I founded the online international exchange community, "Global Classroom."
The purpose of this community is not merely to practice English. It is a platform where students can connect in real-time with peers across the ocean from the free and safe environment of their "everyday classroom," laughing together, thinking together, and building new friendships. The typical Japanese classroom atmosphere of "fearing grammatical mistakes" does not exist there. The desire to communicate takes precedence, and before they know it, students are desperately weaving English words together, even using gestures.
PicSpeak: The Key to Unlocking the Door to the World
However, communication cannot happen if words completely fail you when facing a foreign friend. I needed an ultimate training tool to help students act confidently on the "real-world stage" of the Global Classroom. That tool is "PicSpeak," which I developed.
Students cultivate the agility and confidence to speak English through "Picture Description" in PicSpeak, and then actually converse with friends around the world in the Global Classroom. I am convinced that facilitating this cycle is the truly "living English education" required in the coming era. I will continue to create systems that expand the world for my students.
